Instagram: Highlights and Stories

What to do

  1. Look at the weekly journal to see who is rehearing/working or email around to find out if anyone is doing anything cool and interesting we don’t know about.
  2. Ask them to send over photos, video footage and a short/snappy caption, also any companies they are working with and if they are on Instagram.
  3. Upload either as a post to the ACT feed or as an IGTV video.
  4. Share on Instagram stories, remember to tag the agency member and the company.
  5. Share around the agency to get everyone to share the story on their own Instagram.

How to do it

Adding to Highlights –

(Can only be done via your phone) Highlights are stories that can live permanently on your profile. They can be watched at any time and it’s good to group them together under headings, such as ‘Chumologues’.

  • First, head to the ACT profile page
  • Next to the current Highlights there is a + New button in the middle of the profile page, click on this
  • All previous stories that have been posted will appear, you can select the stories you wish to add and click next
  • Instagram will then give you the option to edit the cover of the Highlight and add a title
  • Once this is all done, you just simply click Add in the top right hand corner

Stories!

Instagram stories disappear after 24 hours, so to make sure we keep the information we are sharing, it’s best to share any content in the story from an IGTV link or a post. That way, people can still see the video/photo/casting information after 24 hours. When creating a story, make sure you add on the ACT logo in the bottom right hand corner, and where possible add a red background/white writing so that the branding of ACT is consistent. You can find the Logo in the Instagram folder in the Marketing folder in the One Drive.

How to add to a story from a post on your feed –
  • Go to the post on your feed that you want to share
  • Tap on the paper airplane button
  • You’ll now see the option to create a story
  • Tap it to see the feed post as a sticker with a customised background ready to share on your story
  • This is where we can get creative!
  • Reposition your sticker by moving the image, you can make it smaller/bigger by pinching the photo with your fingers on your phone
  • Now you can add text to your story
  • You should now see the button Aa, click on this
  • At the bottom of the screen if you swipe right different styles of text will appear, you can now select one
  • At the top you will see an align button, and a colour wheel (to change the colour of your text), if you highlight a part of the text (by holding down the word) you can change the colour of each word. There are also 2 other buttons, A* which allows the text you are writing to have a backdrop, a solid one, partial backdrop or just the words and =A allows your writing to flicker. The slider at the side will allow you to alter the size of your text
  • Once you have selected your chosen colour and have aligned your text, start writing
  • This should be short and snappy, should alert the audience as to what the post is and often include a tag to the agency member/company you are referring to (make sure we are following the company on Instagram and @ them in the post)
  • If you want people to click on the post and be diverted to the feed, add a little arrow saying ‘Click here to watch/find out more’
  • To add an arrow or any sticker to the post, click on the smiley face in the top right hand corner
  • Here you’ll find lots of stickers that you can add to your story, there’s a very handy search bar at the top, you can pretty much search for anything
  • Type in arrow and different arrows which appear, you can then click on the one you like and this will be added to your background
  • If you want to add more text just click on the Aa button again and you can reposition the text by simply moving this into the correct position.
  • You can also resize your text by using the same pinching technique as before
  • If you decide you’ve changed your mind and want to alter what you’ve written you can just click on the text and delete/edit
  • You are now ready to post your story!
  • Again, in the top right hand corner, you will see a downward pointing arrow, click on this to save your story so you don’t lose all your work
  • Then in the bottom right, click Send to and under Your Story select Share

How to add to a story –

If you want to add to your story without using a post or an IGTV video, here’s what you’ll need to do:

  • On the Instagram homepage, where you can see everyone else’s Stories, you’ll see at the start of the list, the ACT logo with a little blue +, click on this
  • You can now create a story from scratch
  • On the left hand side of the screen you’ll see a list of things you can do
  • You can also take a photo (live) by using the large white circle at the bottom of the screen
  • Alternatively use an image already saved to your device.
  • When adding to the story without using a Post/IGTV video, please make the background Red and the writing White and include the ACT Logo (which can be found in the Instagram folder in the Marketing Folder in One Drive)
  • To change the background on a story – After you take the photo/add the photo, tap the pen icon at the top of the screen (looks like a wavy line) and select a colour for your background (this will appear at the bottom of the screen). Then tap and hold anywhere on the screen and the colour you selected will fill the screen. Tap Done or the check mark to save the colour selection.

You can also choose to start a Live Event (could be good to use if wanting to stream a rehearsal/playreading/meeting) or a Boomerang (mini videos that loop back and forth, just for fun)
