How to Create a Featured Image for a News Post

Introduction

A Featured image is the main image that will appear on our news feed. It is important that all images are the same size with a 4:3 ratio. This looks nicest when browsing on phones but also looks good on desktops or tablets. Generally speaking, we can use publicity shots from the company, as these will have been professionally designed. But if you want to add more detail in, we can do that too.

What to do

  1. Prepare a Powerpoint Slide
  2. Insert Image(s)
  3. Design a Featured Image
  4. Download Image
  5. Extract Zipped Image

How to do it

1. Prepare a Powerpoint Slide

  1. Click on this link to open a the Powerpoint template document in a browser
    • The last slide will give you an idea of what has been done before, and which you’re going to replace with your own. (There should only be one slide in the presentation at the end)
    • Select Home tab –New Slide and then Blank

2. Insert Image(s)

  1. Do a google image search or go to the company’s site to copy and paste an image (this is generally preferred as usually a company will have professionally designed an image)(You can also get a client’s latest headshot by visiting our clients on Spotlight) or,
  2. Insert images from your company by selecting “Image” from the Powerpoint menu bar “Pictures/This Device” or,
  3. Insert images from ACT documents by selecting “Image” from the Powerpoint menu bar “Pictures/OneDrive”

3. Design a Featured Image

  1. If you are using more than one image, then you may find it easiest to use Powerpoint’s Designer functionSelect “Design” from the Powerpoint menu bar and “Designer”
  2. You will then be given an image of several options on the right

4. Download Image

  1. When happy with your creation, select the first slide (the old one) and hit delete.If you delete the wrong one just hit undo / ctrl-z
  2. Select File (top left)/Save As/Download as Images/Select Download
  3. Give it a name and save

5. Extract Zipped Image

  1. Go to your Downloads folder and find the file
  2. Select the file and ‘Extract All’ (PC) or ‘Open’ (MAC) to unzip the downloaded file

It is now ready to put into your news post.
